US jobless claims rose for a second week

US initial jobless claims climbed 17,000 to 274,000 in the week ended Apr 29, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Even though this reading came in above the 260,000 expected, claims remained near historically low levels, which is consistent with a strengthening job market.

Jobless claims hit a four-decade low of 248,000 in the week ended April 15 week, the lowest level since 1973.
